As a prospective student at an Aveda Institute Portland, it’s important to get the lay of the land...or school! A virtual tour and admissions meeting with one of our admissions representatives will allow you to see the environment, ask questions, and start preparing for your career in cosmetology, hair design or esthetics...all from the comfort of home!
We asked our admissions representatives Chris Carroll and Annie Schmidt for their insider tips & tricks to make the most out of your virtual tour experience. Here’s what they have to say!
1. Know what to expect on your cosmetology, esthetics, or hair design school tour. 
A: When we meet for a virtual or in-person tour, you’ll have the opportunity to chat one-on-one about your passion for the beauty industry and plans for the future. We’ll help you identify your career goals and chart out a path to get you there! We encourage you to have a list of important questions and various factors you’re looking for in your education experience.
2. Come prepared to get enrollment started.
C: There will be plenty of time to fill out an application during your tour, and we encourage you to do so! Having your ID, Social Security card and high school diploma or GED certificate handy will make the process a lot smoother. If you need some extra time getting those documents in order that’s totally fine; we can still move forward with your application and collect those documents before classes begin. If you’re able, it also helps to have your FAFSA filled out with our school code 041714.
3. Ask questions about anything and everything related to learning cosmetology, hair, or esthetics at the Aveda Institute Portland.
C: I typically encourage prospective students to inquire about the school’s graduation, licensure, and placement rates across all programs – this is truly the “health barometer” of the school and will give you a true sense of how successful their students are. Another important factor to consider when selecting your school is how long they have career services available; with Aveda Institute Portland we are with you for life after graduation!
A: We don’t expect you to have any prior knowledge of the program you are interested in, that’s what we’re here for! Please feel comfortable asking any questions you can think of so we can make sure to go over them with you. We are also there for you should you have questions following your tour! I encourage you to check out our social media pages on Instagram and TikTok to get a sneak peek into the day-to-day excitement at Aveda...this may inspire more questions for you as well.
4. Maximize a virtual tour of the Aveda Institute. 
C: To make the best use of your time, you’ll need to download the video meeting app ahead of our scheduled time and try to get logged in 5 minutes early. We recommend using headphones for the best experience. Feel free to invite anyone who is helping you with your school search! If they’re not with you in-person, they can also easily log in from another location on their own device. There will be plenty of time to fill out an application during the meeting, all you’ll need is a credit or debit card for the $20 app fee and access to your email. From there we will schedule you to have a phone call with our financial aid team to chat about FAFSA, payment plans, and other financial aid options.
5. Follow up after your tour.
A: After your tour, we will send you a voucher for a free service at the school. This is also good for a plus one, so bring along a friend as well! This is a fantastic opportunity for you to see the school in person, experience a service in our environment, and chat with a current student. We hope this inspires you even further!
6. Be yourself. Your cosmetology, esthetics, or hair design school experience is crucial to YOUR career success.
A: The beauty industry is a creative environment, there is a huge variety of ways you can utilize your future license. Use your imagination and create a vision board of where you would like to be in the future! This is great to continue to add to as you proceed into your program. Explore social media, find creators who inspire you! Create your own social media, think about your social media handle and what you might want to call it so that as you grow through our program you can add to your portfolio and show your beautiful work through your experience as a student. Explore your industry as well by visiting websites and businesses to begin building an idea of the future you are working towards.
