How Do You Know If Beauty School Is Right For You?

Are you graduating from high school and trying to figure out the right career path? Are you tired of working in a dead-end job and want to find a career that’s more fulfilling? Or maybe you’re re-entering the workforce and want a job that will support your family and provide you with a creative outlet. A career in the beauty industry might be right for you, but before you make a decision, it’s smart to do a little homework.

Here are some important things to consider before you make the leap into cosmetology school.

Do you like working with your hands?

The beauty industry is very hands-on. A large portion of your day is spent with your hands in hair, practicing techniques and styles on mannequins, models, and clients. If you like to learn by doing, beauty school is a great fit for you.

Do you like interacting with people?

If not, the beauty industry is probably not right for you. You have to be able to converse with a wide variety of people, make them feel welcome, have conversations with them and build relationships with them so they will become long-time customers. This doesn’t mean it’s a career for extroverts only, but if you’re super shy or don’t like talking to strangers, it is something you will have to overcome.

Can you stand on your feet all day?

As a hair stylist, esthetician or make-up artist, you’ll spend much of the day on your feet. (That’s why comfortable shoes are so important!) Make sure that you feel comfortable being on your feet and moving around for most of the day.

Are you a motivated self-starter?

This is a business, after all, and you’ll need to work hard and develop a clientele. Your clients and your salon owner depend on you, so a good work ethic is important as you begin your education.

Do you like to learn?

Your education will consist of in-class lectures, hands-on-practice and even online tutorials and assignments - all through our digital curriculum. And the learning doesn’t stop after you leave school and begin work. There are always new techniques to learn, which is part of the fun and excitement of a career in the beauty industry.

Take the first step

Whether you want to learn a specific area of study like hair design, esthiology or cosmetology (hair design, nail technology and esthetics), it’s wise to visit several schools to determine which one is right for you. Of course, we think Aveda offers the highest quality education that can help you succeed in the industry, so come in and see for yourself!
